John Armstrong Memorial Trophy
13 October 2023
In a season that started on rain drenched fairways the season ended in similar conditions as Saxilby Golf Society completed there 2023 campaign.
With heavy overnight rain and no sign of a let up in the weather the major surprise was that the Lincoln Golf Club was even open.
With more non runners than at Chepstow Races [even the Treasurer was there] the hardy souls of the Society took to the first tee in what at times was more like a Brian Rix farce. However at the conclusion of the round only one point separated the top five players in what was the closest match for many years.
On these occasions conditions are the same for all concerned and all can claim to have no luck on there side.
It was Neil Houghton who emerged victorious with 37 points and a back nine of 21 who took the John Armstrong Memorial Trophy from Gary Benson who continued what has been a good season for him personally.
It was even tighter for the final podium position with Captain Clive Dixon taking third after a card countback from both Martyn Lynes and Jonathon Sankey all scoring 36 points.
Nearest the pins on the day went to Houghton[2] Benson, David Thorpe and Keith Hardy while 2 balls went the way of Benson, Dixon and Thorpe.
Amazingly this was the 20th year since the loss of John who was a stalwart Member of the Society.
After excellent fish and chip meal Captain Dixon gave a toast to absent friends of the Society.
Bill Jones, Brian Croft, Terry Maddison and John. Who we all miss greatly.
Clive went on to entertain us with his after dinner speech that certainly had those present in tears of laughter.
The Society would like to thank Carlton and the team at Cliff Bradley & Sons for sponsoring the Memorial Day.
