Phoenix

Secretarys Trophy
10 September 2021

Saxilby Golf Society made a first ever visit to Phoenix Golf Club at Rotherham in pursuit of the Secretary’s Trophy.

The slightly undulated parkland course with extensive views over South Yorkshire proved an excellent turnout with an enjoyable days golf.

Another good turnout of Members were present with over two thirds of the field scoring over 30 points. The par 3’s proved a little tricky with only a chip in by the evergreen Ian Waite being the days only two ball. In fact nobody hit the green on two of the par 3’s with the nearest pins on the other 3 going to Ron Hersey, Martyn Lynes and Keith Hardy.

The race for honours and the Secretary’s Trophy proved tight with Neil Houghton with 39 points taking 1st place from Ron Hersey who scored 37. Ron had won the Captain’s Day at Boston and his two shot handicap reduction proving decisive. Martyn Lynes with 36 took third place and a third podium finish of the campaign.

Only three points separated the next seven players and on another day could well have been in the prizes.

October’s fixture sees the annual John Armstrong Trophy at Lincoln Golf Club on Friday 11th October. This years event will be sponsored by Codeze Computer Programming and we thank Michael Bilson for setting this up.
