Captains Day
12 July 2021
Dear Member
Having seen the weather over the Country today one has to say how lucky we were for Geoff’s Captains Day that the rain stopped and the sun shone and we all had an enjoyable day.
With the Captain welcoming us over bacon rolls with a personalised golf towel. Geoff soon struck his tee shot down the middle as we all set out in pursuit of glory.
The parkland course was certainly causing a few problems with many visiting the trees on the tight but excellently presented course.
We have talked about an ageing Society and i’m not sure if we set a record with the final fourball having a combined age of 319 years. They say age has no barrier and this was certainly the case with the winner, two nearest the pins and a two ball coming from the quartet.
At the conclusion of play and meal in the clubhouse the Captain stood up for his Captains speech before handing out the prizes from an overloaded table of prizes.
It was good to see Ron Hersey who has certainly gone through the mill health wise lately who secured victory with 40 points. This was Ron’s first Society win since 2012 when winning the Reindeer Trophy at Normanby Hall.
An inform Martyn Lynes continued his good form to take second place with 38 points with David Thorpe [37] needing a card countback to beat Neil Houghton into third. Ten more players achieved over 30 points in a tight finish for places.
Nearest the pins came the way of Ray Caines, Terry Maddison and Neil Houghton with the three 2 balls going the way of Hersey, Houghton and Lee Hayward.
As on these Captains Day everyone receives a prize or in this instance two.
I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Members in thanking Geoff for an excellent Captains Day.
The next Society fixture is at Blankney Golf Club on Friday 6th August when the Shaw/Brown Trophy will be competed for.
