I don’t think I can recollect such tough conditions for a opening Society fixture as Saxilby Golf Society’s 34th season got underway at Forest Pines.
With the course already soddened rain and strong winds welcomed the players to the first tee.
Many look forward to the season opener and it was good to see a healthy turn out of 30 members. The Society welcome new Members David Beech, Steve Guilliatt and Paul Stafford and I can assure them better days weather lie ahead.
Not surprisingly scoring was low and that the average score of 24.55 was the lowest in the Societies History.
At the conclusion of play only one player had played below his handicap. It was good to see Harvey Benson claim his maiden Society victory with 37 points.
Some steady golf in such atrocious conditions gave him a deserved victory. That wily old fox and last years Captain Clive Dixon came second with 34 points while Jonathon Sankey came third on countback with 30 points.
The nearest pins on the day went to Dixon, Keith Hardy and Paul Stafford with Paul turning his superb tee shot at the 16th into the only two ball of the day.
The Society would like to thank Aiden and the team at Screwfix for sponsoring the day and there support to the Society.
The Society would also like to thank Ransome Jacobsen mowers and turf equipment who have kindly supplied the Society with caps and beany hats.
These will be bought by the Society Members with the money going to Prostrate cancer the chosen Charity on Captain John.
The Members retired to the Shires at Cleatham for an excellent meal followed by the fines and presentations. Fines master Flint had certainly sharpened his pencil since last season.
May’s fixture sees the short trip to Radcliffe on Trent when the T.C.Maddison Memorial Trophy will be up for grabs. We welcome John J Doe & Son as the days sponsor and are delighted MD Andrew Doe will be joining us on Wednesday 9th May.
