Grimsby

Shaw/Brown Trophy
26 August 2022

How nice it was to see Messrs Shaw and Brown present for the 32nd year of the Shaw/Brown Trophy that they donated to Saxilby Golf Society in the inaugural year in 1991. With a combined age of 161 years they accompanied Captain Neil Houghton in the opening three ball.

Grimsby Golf Club was the setting and once again the parkland course was in pristine condition despite the recent dry weather. The Society have visited Grimsby many times over the years and enjoy there trips to Great Grimsby and this was no exception.

At the conclusion of play Secretary Keith Hardy with 39 points took first spot. In fact it was his first Shaw/Brown win and he had played in all the 32 years of the Competition. A card countback was needed to determine second place and that went to Martyn Lynes with 37 points and a back nine of 19 points. Gary Benson taking the final place on the podium [37] with 17 points on the back nine. Captain Houghton and Chairman Graham Flint both scored creditable 36 points to just miss out on the honours.

Nearest the pins on the day went to Lee Hayward, Derek Linton, Martyn Lynes and Jake Benson with Derek achieving the only two ball of the day.

Once everyone was in the clubhouse the party had the customary Fish & Chips before another repartee from the Captain {his jokes are getting better] who then proceeded with the awards to the days successful golfers.

The Society move on with a return visit to Phoenix Golf Club at Rotherham on Friday 16th September when Ron Hersey will be looking to retain the Secretary’s Trophy.
